Sustainable packaging and plastics are identified as a key issue for commercial food buyers in Ireland, according to new research conducted by Borrow Bia.

When asked which sustainability issues will become more important to their business over the next three years, packaging was the topic cited most by purchasing staff surveyed.At the same time, packaging remains a top concern for consumers, with about three in 10 consumers surveyed reporting that sustainable packaging affects their choices when shopping.

In order to minimize the impact on the environment, it is important to educate consumers about the overall aspects of packaging.Thus, packaging and sustainability are often contradictory to consumers, but in a larger sense, packaging has a role to play in environmental sustainability.

According to Lilienfeld, there are many misconceptions among consumers about why packaging is sustainable.Grocer retailers can help correct this, but it helps to understand the mindset of the consumer first.

Consumer attitudes are moving in two key directions: First, they want more recyclable packaging;Two, they want biodegradable or compostable packaging.

From a scientific point of view, Lilienfeld says that recyclable packaging and packaging made from recycled materials is a good thing, but when it comes to biodegradable packaging, many consumers don't realize there are many issues.

"Biodegradation is a linear strategy, it's not circular, because at the end of the day it says the industrial composting facility is not going to change back to anything usable," says Lilienfeld."People tend to believe it's going to be part of the compost, but it's not.The output of biodegradable packaging is greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, water vapor -- it has no environmental advantage."Better than nothing, though, isn't it?
